I haven’t thought about the band Korn in forever. In fact, I couldn’t tell you the last time I heard a Korn song before my colleague sent me this footage of Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s son, 12-year-old Tye Trujillo, playing with Korn.
This pre-teen bassist is playing with Korn during a 6-concert tour throughout South America, and the footage above shows him shredding the mother fuckin’ walls off during their concert in Bogota, Colombia on the 17th. I’m not sure what’s more impressive, his insane skills with the bass at just 12-years-old or the length of his hair. Growing it out that long would take a fucking lifetime for me, but his little dude is already looking the part of a full-blown Nu Metal rock god.
So how did the 12-year-old son of Metallica’s bassist end up on tour with Korn? According to LoudWire, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo never pushed music on his son, and 12-year-old Tye has pursued this all on his own:
“I never forced him on music,” Trujillo tells Brazil’s GloboPlay. “I always felt that if he wanted to embrace an instrument, great; I’d try to help him with it. So initially, at first, it was drums. And then around that same time, when he was one, he had a little plastic guitar, and he would play it all the time, just strumming it — always strumming it everywhere, to the point where the plastic was worn down.”
“It’s a beautiful thing, ’cause he’s still a 12-year-old,” he continues, “And he still acts wild and crazy, as a twelve-year-old should, but when it comes to music, he’s very focused. And with Korn, it’s funny, because I haven’t shown him anything at all for the Korn stuff — I’ve been too busy and I’ve been out of town a lot — and he’s taking this opportunity very serious.” (via LoudWire)
Is it fair to call this kid a ‘prodigy’ when it’s clear that his insane skills on the bass were inherited from his legendary father? This kid’s definitely performing with Korn at a genius level on the bass…but would you call him a prodigy?
